John Wallace Blog – Week 10 in Singapore

After an amazing spring break, it was time for us to go to Singapore for the second half of our study abroad trip. It’s my first time being in a non-western country, but I wouldn’t say I’ve been hit with a massive amount of culture shock. Here’s some photos from our first day! The same day, I took the extremely fast metro system to Chinatown. Although I came there to eat at a hawker center, I ended up eating at a very good Thai place on the street. I noticed that a lot of people seem to stare in tourists […]

John Wallace Birthday Blog – Week 9 in Cairns

My ninth week on this trip was definitely one of most action-filled weeks of my entire life! One that just so happened to coincide with my twenty first birthday! So let’s get started with our first important excursion, that being diving in the great barrier reef on Sunday the 10th of March! To say this day started spectacularly would be a lie… The boat ride to our destination on the stunning great barrier reef was not easy by any means. The weather was rough to the point where all my experience being on boats did nothing to soothe seasickness. It […]

John Wallace Blog – Week 8

This week was my final week in a Sydney, one which was largely marked by a lot of classwork as our study time rounded to a close. In the end, I really loved my last two classes. International finance was very interesting and provided me with skills that I will sorely need in Singapore under my Morningstar internship. I also really loved tax class – the previous sentence was something I never thought I would say, but I did actually enjoy taxes. Although, it felt slightly odd learning American taxes while in Australia On the final day in Sydney, I […]

John Wallace Blog – Week 7

This week, I finally went on a hike after seven weeks in Australia. I took a 2 hour train ride to the Blue mountains, immersing myself in the Australian countryside along the way. Our trail began with a view of the three sisters, a sight that reminded me of the beautiful rock formations that dotted the great ocean road back in Melbourne. The trail was extremely vertical in the beginning and end, as we were traveling down and up cliffs with steep stairs. The best part of the Blue mountains, however, was the waterfalls! The waterfalls that dotted the path […]

John Wallace Blog – Week 6

This week, I went to two locations I had always wanted to go to in Sydney before I left for the towering skyscrapers of Singapore! The first was camp cove, an area of beautiful cliffs accessable by ferry. My time on the ferry itself was quite enjoyable, with numerous opportunities to take some great photos of Sydney’s coast. This small trip really gave me a stronger appreciation for the small beachs that find themselves nestled between rocky cliffs. It’s quite different in America, where most beaches stretch continously for as far as the eye can see. The more condensed beachs […]

John Wallace Blog – Week 5

On Valentines day, I met my mother after she returned from Cannes. I was eager to see her before she left back to America the next day, so I decided to buy her flowers like the good son I am. (Hopefully that’s what she thinks at least). Afterwards, we went to a really cool speakeasy called Baxter’s Inn; one which was personified by playing music during the American prohibition era. On Friday, We all had an extremely interesting meeting with a Bucknell Alumni by the name of Anthony “Tony” Massaro. To say that his life is fascinating is a massive […]
