Dirk in Bintan – Week 12

This past weekend we all went to Bintan to kick back and relax, unfortunately, the sun got the better of some of us. Bintan was a stunning picturesque location. The only issue was the ocean. Because of Singapore’s vast seaport, the waterways off the coast of Indonesia have the highest concentration of oil slicks and other pollutants. This produces tar in the water. The tar does not appear to be particularly dangerous and is frequently difficult to detect, but you can be certain it is present. Little black specks will stick to your skin and be exceedingly difficult to remove. […]

Dirk in Singapore – Week 11

I’ve now spent over two weeks in Singapore, slowly but surely adapting to the different way of life. It is extremely astounding how humid it is here. Just the other day I was determined to join a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym in the area next to my office. I figured this would be a good opportunity to get back into shape as well as pick up a new skill. Unfortunately, Singapore is a maze when it comes to finding shops/locations inside the massive malls and complexes that oftentimes can have 8 floors both above and below ground. The day I […]

Dirk in Singapore – Week 10

This past week has been my first in Singapore! On Monday I was able to travel via the local subway system to the Ministry of Manpower to obtain my Work Holiday Pass. After getting approved I made my way to BDO LLP, my internship site. Once I navigated my way here, I was stunned by the building I would be working in for the next two months. The Bottom floor of my building is home to one of Singapore’s top rated gin bars. The exterior of the building is scattered with stunning statues and niche stone and metal work.  After […]

Week 5

This week has been completely out of pocket! This week, we have our alumni-funded wine trip a few hours outside of Sydney; nevertheless, I never planned to spend the whole night before the wine tour in the emergency room. The wine trip this week was fantastic! It was so cool to get out of the city and see the rural countryside of Australia (not quite what I expected). What I found most interesting was the convergence of our in-class discussions of wildfires and the indirect impact they have on the economy, as well as the impact they had on the […]

Week 4 Sydney IMAX

Did you know, Sydney is home to one of the largest IMAX movie theaters in the world? Not only is this Gigantic theater in Sydney but it’s right outside our front door. This week everything has begun to set into a more rhythmic style as everyone is starting to feel less like they’re on vacation and more like they are living in Australia. Or at least that’s how I feel. Last week was a lot of fun, lots of partying, and also lots of work. Finishing up the midpoint of the semester means that we had to finish up our […]

Week 3

This past week we had the opportunity to travel to Melbourne and it was amazing! While in Melbourne I was able to meet some old family friends, whom I haven’t connected with since they moved here 6 years ago. Additionally, I saw Sean Paul perform live at a bar on my first night in Melbourne. After watching the performance, a few friends and I decided to bar crawl around the city and see some of the famous local bars. On Saturday morning, we took advantage of the local Lime scooters as we explored as much as we could in the […]
