Wanderlust Wonders: Vivian’s Journey Abroad (Week 13)

Lion City Legends- Week 5

This week is dedicated to further immersing myself in the natural beauty surrounding Singapore. Our team at BDO LLP came together for a meaningful corporate social responsibility (CSR) event at Tiong Bahru Park, strengthening our bonds as colleagues. Additionally, I had the privilege of exploring Istana, Singapore’s equivalent to the White House, serving as the official residence and office of the president.

Highlight #1: Park Cleanup

The CSR event at Tiong Bahru Park provided a unique opportunity for collaboration among colleagues from various departments at BDO. As we worked together to clean the park, sorting through rubbish and recyclables, I appreciated the chance to connect with individuals from the cybersecurity and risk advisory teams, staff I typically do not interact with in my role as an internal auditor.

This initiative reflects BDO’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance principles, underscoring the importance of tangible actions in supporting sustainability efforts. Participating in this inter-departmental event not only fostered camaraderie but also reinforced our collective dedication to making a positive impact beyond the firm.

Highlight #2: The Istana

Exploring the sprawling grounds of Istana proved to be an unexpected delight. As I passed through the grand white gates, reserved for special occasions like today’s visit, I found myself surrounded by lush greenery and remarkable sights. What began as a casual tour evolved into a unique experience filled with surprises, from the tranquil Japanese garden to the historic gun terrace and nutmeg grove. Inside, I was further fascinated by the collection of historical sculptures and artifacts, transforming Istana into more than just a residence—it’s a living museum of Singapore’s past and present.

The most memorable part of the day was undoubtedly the opportunity to meet President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his wife, Jane Yumiko Ittogi. Their presence was both humbling and inspiring, adding a personal touch to the Istana’s rich history and significance as a symbol of Singaporean leadership.

Singapore’s natural and historical wonders are diverse and enriching. From coming together with colleagues for a meaningful CSR event at Tiong Bahru Park to experiencing the grandeur of Istana, each moment has deepened my appreciation for the beauty and diversity of this vibrant city-state. As I reflect on this week’s happenings, I am reminded of the importance of embracing opportunities for growth, connection, and stewardship in both professional and personal endeavors. Singapore continues to surprise and delight, offering endless possibilities for exploration and discovery.
