Going to Singapore was a weird feeling. I was very sad to say goodbye to my girlfriend and Australia, but also ready to explore a new country. Singapore is much different than Australia with massive culture change. One of the main things I knew going into Singapore was its strict laws – hopefully I can stay out of trouble. We arrived into Singapore late at night and went straight to bed at the apartments we were provided by this program. The next morning we had a brief orientation followed by a group lunch. The rest of the day we had the time to explore this unfamiliar city.
Our apartments are right off of Orchard Road which is a very convenient location as it is close to the vibrant part of the city and also very close to the metro lines. The public transit in Singapore is very impressive as it is extremely connected and also spotless. Singapore takes its cleanliness very proudly and wants to keep it that way.
On Monday I had my first day of my eight week internship as part of the program. For my internship I am doing Equity Research at Morningstar, a Chicago-based investment research platform. It was great to shift in a working life as I have never had an office job before and I believe it will help set me up for my internship over the summer. I have a great team and we work very well together. I am working with a kid from Washington and Lee who I became good friends with in Australia.
The rest of the week was filled with me working. It was always nice to meet up with friends for dinner at a local hawker center. These hawker centers are food courts that have many different food stands with cheap and extremely good food. Highly recommend if anyone ever visits Singapore.
