Wanderlust Wonders: Vivian’s Journey Abroad (week 4)
Down Under Diaries- Week 4
This week has been an absolute whirlwind of excitement and cultural immersions and is marked by a kaleidoscope of cultural celebrations in honor of Chinese New Year. From enchanting garden strolls at the Chinese Garden of Friendship to jaw-dropping performances, each moment is truly a testament to the rich cultural diversity of Sydney. This week reached its peak with the Bridge Climb expedition, where I saw incredible panoramic views of Sydney’s skyline.
Highlight #1 – The Chinese Garden of Friendship
To kick off the festivities of Chinese New Year, I visited the Chinese Garden of Friendship. This Garden is a breathtaking sight: upon entrance, we are greeted with a large pond sprinkled with lily pads and flowers. Willow trees dangle over the pond, sweeping from side to side as the breeze calmly passes. I visit a 中国书法家 (Chinese calligrapher) and receive a handwritten note of my name on a red traditional rice sheet, xuan paper. Walking throughout the Garden is relaxing and calms my body, mind, and soul.

Highlight #2 – Annual Chinese New Year Performance
I had the pleasure of attending the Chinese New Year Performance hosted by the City of Sydney council. This event was a spectacular showcase of talents, featuring captivating performances of dragon dances, Chinese fans and swords, and traditional Chinese instruments. That night, I experienced my first-ever drone show at Darling Harbour. All these events are a true celebration of Asian culture and heritage, and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to witness them.

Highlight #3 – Bridge Climb
I embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with the Bridge Climb Summit Night tour. This specific tour leads to the very top arch of the bridge (1,000+ steps) and has been completed by celebrities such as Prince Harry and Oprah. The view from above is spectacular. Above us, stars twinkle in the distance; down below, pedestrians and cars look minuscule. Afar, we see fireworks set off at Darling Harbour! I was in awe and wonder at the beauty of it all.

This week has been filled with unforgettable memories and once-in-a-lifetime moments. As I bid farewell to the Year of the Rabbit and welcome the Year of the Dragon with open arms, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to immerse myself in Sydney’s diverse community that sets itself apart from other cities in the world!
