Classes have officially ended and finals seem to have gone well. It is nice to be done with classes as I will not be taking any for the next few months. For this trip, we get to go to Cairns for spring break. This was really exciting for me as my girlfriend from Bucknell is coming to visit me. The school put all of us at Gilligan’s hostel, but my girlfriend and I decided to get an Airbnb with my other friend who’s girlfriend was also visiting. Landing in Cairns, it was immediately apparent this would be a lot different than Sydney. It was great to see my girlfriend again and we enjoyed time getting some nice meals at restaurants along the coast. At night we would head to Gilligan’s to meet up with the rest of my friends from the trip.
Cairns provided us with many potential opportunities. One of the main attractions was snorkling the Great Barrier Reef. The boat ride out to the reef was brutal as it was incredibly choppy – I remember many people being seasick. Once we got out there though it was amazing to see one of the great wonders of the world.
I rented a car for one of the days to go explore the famous waterfalls of Northern Australia. It was a thrill to finally drive a car again, but was also a bit different to be driving on the opposite side of the road. The waterfalls we saw were amazing and I wish we were able to swim in all them, but it was too dangerous that day.
Bucknell also provided us the opportunity to go to Fitzroy island which has one of the nicest beaches in the world. There were also many hikes on the island we could have done.
Overall Cairns was a blast and I am very fortunate my girlfriend came to visit me!
