Week 3 in Auckland

This week at my internship I continued on with the income commission policy investigation. We outlined the steps we will take with each team that contributes to income commission so we can value how much time and effort each person dedicates to this policy and find out how much the work is really worth. The main question we are trying to answer is if the current commission fee that is charged is fair to all clients. I also did some work with FATCA, making sure foreign clients of the Trust are complying with the tax standards and providing us with the necessary information for the Trust to carry out other tax-related activities.

This weekend, my roommates and I got on a bus and did a tour of Hobbiton, the movie set of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. I hadn’t watched these movies before coming here but I’m glad I did before going to see the set. We got to go inside one of the fully furnished houses and had a drink at the Green Dragon, which is a bar from the movies. After Hobbiton, we got lunch at a cafe and headed to a glow worm cave. We started by walking through parts of the cave and looking at the structures the stalactites and stalagmites created over the years. As we got deeper, we got to a point where there were no lights and we got on a boat. As we rode the boat through to the other side of the cave, I saw thousands of blue glow worms on the ceiling that looked like stars in the sky. Unfortunately, they didn’t allow for pictures in the cave because it is considered disrespectful to the dead Māori chiefs that were buried there in the past, so I only got some of the cave exit.
