Dirk in Singapore – Week 10

This past week has been my first in Singapore! On Monday I was able to travel via the local subway system to the Ministry of Manpower to obtain my Work Holiday Pass. After getting approved I made my way to BDO LLP, my internship site. Once I navigated my way here, I was stunned by the building I would be working in for the next two months. The Bottom floor of my building is home to one of Singapore’s top rated gin bars. The exterior of the building is scattered with stunning statues and niche stone and metal work.

After about an hour I was introduced to the entire team at the office and was given my first deliverable due on Friday. My job was to help work with local charities to vet their annual reports and financial statements. While interning here I will be working with three other Bucknell students: Nicole, Aisling, and Vivian.

Being in Singapore is a completely different experience than anywhere in Australia. The difference in city layout alone is incomparable. Singapore is essentially a city with and entire city below ground, malls connected via trains and tunnels. Countless people swarm the small shopping centers on a daily basis as the climate here makes it unbearable to walk above ground, thus people scour to find the cool air conditioned subterranean areas.
