Grace Kim – Week 12

This week was a week of trying local flavors and exploring more of Singapore itself!

Some highlights for food include carrot cake and salted egg chicken. Lexi and I tried carrot cake, and it was so different from what we were expecting it to be like. Rather than it being crunchy or hard from radish, the texture was incredibly soft and chewy. We got the combo of black and white, and they were both so flavorful. The salted egg chicken was incredible and I would definitely get it again.

Of course, can’t forget about the dessert! I tried Cheng Tng, which is a more healthy dessert with jujube, barley, and other things I do not know the names of. It was nice and refreshing and not too sweet. Lexi and I also got mango ice dessert! It was huge and so incredibly delicious– I would easily recommend to anyone who likes mango.

I also visited the Ramadan night market again, as it was ending this weekend. While I was too full for food, I got a 1000mL of thai tea for only $5! It was so good and sweet and refreshing.

During our bi-weekly group dinner, I ordered seafood laksa and spring rolls! This was my second ever laksa, and it was way better than the one I had in Sydney. The coconut flavor was strong but the spiciness and soup balanced it well, as well as the variety of seafood included.

Speaking of laksa, we went to a cooking class and learned how to cook it! The class itself was so much fun and the teacher was so nice and helpful in educating us on the background and on each ingredient. I really liked how it turned out and it was so much fun cooking. After this class, I explored Joo Chait, where there were these pretty colorful houses and lots of street art! It was so hot this day so I got ice cream from Birds of Paradise, which had been recommended to me by a friend who lives in Indonesia. I got macadamia blue pea and white chrysanthemum with cacao nibs and it was hands down some of the best ice cream I have had during this entire trip.

And some pretty views! I went to another Supertrees show, but this month’s theme is Retro Fever, so more music from the 70s. It was really nice and I will definitely come back in May again, and before then too. We also had a tour around the Botanical Garden, where we got to walk through and learn about the orchid garden. It was informative and very engaging, and the orchids were beautiful. They were vibrant in color and ranged from purple to orange to white.
