Wanderlust Wonders: Vivian’s Journey Abroad (week 5)

Down Under Diaries- Week 5

From lively excitements of university orientation to serene beauties of Australia’s oldest wine-growing region and harmonious piano melodies, this week is the epitome of unique experiences that define my time in Sydney. At UTS’s O’Day (orientation), I formed lasting friendships with fellow Australians and gained a deeper insight into the life of a full-time student at an Australian university. Over the weekend, Bucknell students had the privilege of touring wineries at Hunter Valley and learning more about the wine industry. I also played piano at the Japanese restaurant in Darling Harbour Plaza.

Highlight #1: UTS O’Day

This week marks the beginning of an exciting moment at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). As the academic schedules of Australian institutions are reversed from American institutions, UTS hosts its orientation in February. The campus is energized with incoming students, including myself, participating in O’Day. Upon arriving, I am embraced by a plethora of free campus activities and events designed to greet students and families with open arms.

This welcoming atmosphere and the plethora of unique clubs, including the Taylor Swift fan club and the Oztag club, made it easy to form new friendships. Friendship bracelet making, carnival games, and various workshops filled the day; my personal highlight is the smoothie-making bicycle. Picture this: a bike with a blender attached to it. As I pedaled away, the energy transferred from my efforts smashed fruits in a blender, resulting in delicious smoothies. Additionally, I managed to beat the claw machine prize at the Samsung booth- my first-ever win!

Highlight #2: Hunter Valley

Bucknell students were immersed in the world of winemaking as we visited 2 wineries in Hunter Valley, the birthplace of Australian wines: Brokenwood Winery and Scarborough Winery. From learning about the intricacies of the production process and the unique business model of wineries to witnessing breathtaking sceneries of the vineyards, it was an enlightening experience. Despite not being a wine drinker myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the opportunity to indulge in a deliciously fresh meal at Brokenwood Winery. The day was enriched with laughter, discoveries, and a stronger understanding of the wine industry.

Highlight #3: Piano Performance

Following the wine tour, I perform at Ichoume, providing a soothing piano soundtrack to the evening. Outside, a dragon dance festival added to the ambiance, with vibrant colors and energetic performances captivating the crowd. It was a joyous celebration of Asian culture and community, and I felt blessed to be a part of it.

As diners enjoyed their meals, I provided accompaniment, serenading them with piano waltzes and recommendations. It was a magical end to an unforgettable week in Sydney.

This week has been a whirlwind of excitement and discovery. The vibrant environment of UTS, tranquil beauty of Hunter Valley, and music tunes at Ichoume, continue to bring new quests and unforgettable memories. As I reflect on this week’s happenings, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for the experiences and connections forged along the way as we are over halfway through our Australia trip.

Cheers to many more adventures in the coming weeks!
