Week 2 In Sydney

This week in Sydney we dove deeper into financial decision modeling topics as well as further discussion about Australian culture and lifestyle in both of my classes. In ANOP 302 we practiced using solver in excel to optimize efficiency for various scenarios of business operations. I also learned to use pivot tables to analyze data which will be used in the near future for my first individual report about a given set of data. In my Australian culture class I learned about the Great Australian Dream compared to the Great American Dream and discussed how the reality of these ideal lifestyles has changed over the years. I also learned about the image that Australia has been given through cultural icons such as Crocodile Dundee, and how it effects, and in a way, markets the country toward outsiders.

There were no group excursions planned for this week so it was up to each student to explore the city at their leisure. One of the more exciting things that I did this week was attend a Noah Kahan concert with my roommate. We were late to the concert to begin with, and in the process of rushing to get a ticket from the box office, we accidentally went to the wrong arena and purchased tickets to a cricket championship game, not realizing this until we walked in. It was amazing to see how passionate the people of Australia are about the sport. It was comparable to an NFL game in America. We left the game after a few minutes and still managed to get tickets to the concert. We made our way up to the third row of general admission, met some locals, and had a great time singing his songs. Most of those in attendance were obviously Australian, but they were still very excited to see an American country artist perform for them.

Aside from the concert, I continued to explore the beaches of Australia and am always amazed at the scenery they have to offer. This week I visited Bondi beach again, as well as Manly and Coogee. I cannot complain about any of them, but if I had to pick a favorite I would have to go with Bondi even though it is considered one of the most “touristy” beaches in Australia. So far, all of the beaches have offered surfing classes that I’ve been considering trying, especially since it’s such a huge part of the culture here. A ferry ride is required to get to Manly beach but every bit of the ride was enjoyable and had some great views. The picture below is of the stunning sunset at Bondi.

Next week I expect the intensity of my classes to pick up a bit with some larger assignments due. I am also looking forward to our group trip to Melbourne next weekend, which will be the first place I’ve been to in Australia outside of Sydney. We are only visiting for two days but as far as some locals that I’ve spoken to are concerned, that all we should need to experience what the city has to offer.
